THE STILL SMALL VOICE
CONNECTING WITH THE INNER WISDOM OF LOVE

SHORT REFLECTION
I love the title of a novel by Arundhati Roy - ‘The God of Small Things’. It evokes in me a sense of the delightful mystery, miracles and magic hidden in the ordinariness of our everyday lives.
The other day, on a call with leaders from around the world, we were sharing what we were grateful for and one woman’s face lit up as she said “I’m grateful for my pillow and the beautiful new pillowcase I got this week”. This is someone who deals with issues of major Global importance in her day-to-day life and yet the first thing that came to mind was her feather pillow!
Don’t you find that it’s often the tiniest things that make the biggest difference - a baby’s smile, strawberries and cream, a bird on a wire singing outside your bedroom window, the first primroses, baby lambs, a letter from a friend, honeycomb ice-cream, a warm bed, a bubble bath, a hot cup of tea on a cold day. The list is infinite.
Fear, I find, is an attention seeker, noisy, demanding, impatient and overwhelming. Most of the time we’re bombarded by it from all sides. It’s hard not to get caught up in it.
Love, on the other hand is often quiet. It comes dressed in the ordinary, the insignificant and the unremarkable and unless we have eyes to see, ears to hear and a heart to recognise LOVE, we could easily miss it.
I have a little rule of thumb that helps me to recognise whether it’s fear or love that are operating in my life. I stop, breathe and become still and I listen deep within because I know that:
FEAR CONTRACTS ME - LOVE EXPANDS ME
FEAR DRIVES ME - LOVE DRAWS ME
WHEN I WELCOME FEAR WITH COMPASSION AND LOVE
FEAR GROWS QUIET
UNTIL THERE’S NOTHING LEFT BUT
LOVE
AND LOVE DELIGHTS ME AND EVERYONE AROUND ME.
QUESTIONS TO CONTEMPLATE
If you could hear LOVE whispering to you from the depths of your own soul, what would it be saying to you?
How might that impact your choices going forward?
